  1. from killer mix round one, I learned 2 things:
    1. most of you would have your mix tape ejected as soon as your 'run up a tree' side gave way to the 'where can I score some cyanide' side.
    2. you all dig the sad stuff.

as was the creation of 'post-tenesmal bliss', this mix has stayed true to form, taking you on a journey that will lift those dark clouds in favor of sunny days.

    1. A THOUSAND HOURS.....remember when krs-one came out with 'criminal minded' only to morph into 'the teacher' on subsequent BDP records? he said it was for street cred, that you simply couldn't start preaching to people without showing them you know the deal. so I picked the saddest song in my possession so that some of you would immediately realize, "hey, this guy has some really sad shit!! I like it!" Of note, I once played this song on repeat after ending a 5-year relationship. a smarter idea would have simply been to eat glass and drink a bottle of mag citrate. so we're off, we get the negative emotions and bring them to the surface.

    2. LONESOME SWAN - keep the sadness rolling with glasvegas. solid new CD, btw.

    3. MADE A MOUNTAIN - in an effort to have at least one song that the music gurus here haven't heard, I pulled this poorly recorded cd out from my osu days. you've 'really made a mountain of what wasn't there.' Yeah, your problems are mainly self-induced, so let's get to work on that.

    4. PLEA FROM A CAT...could have been the title track, as this is what we are trying to accomplish. think of this as a little pep talk as we rid the depressive demons. 'i know you're strong.'

    5. 100 MILES...the only good post-ice cube NWA track there is. by now the sadness is giving way to anger, and what better way to get it out than with some good anger music. take the line 'you don't know shit till you been in my shoes' and own it.

    6. HERE TO STAY - now we're talking. let it out, baby, let it out. don't hurt your neck rocking to this one. with a ridiculously filthy bass line, a ridiculously good breakdown, and an insanely good ending, this song is actually dedicated to alex, the golden child. the guy with great roots in his love for 'siamese dream' but who now thinks 'face melters' are songs like 'atlas' by battles. if you don't like this song, try putting it on your workout mix and watch 20 seconds come off your mile time. yet with all its anger, the song offers a ray of hope. 'i'm here to stay'

    7. RENEGADES OF FUNK - speaking of ridiculously good bass lines, try this one from the king of anger bands. you're feeling less angry now, and starting to have some fun with the music. if this song doesn't make at least one body part move, check yourself into a nursing home, cuz life is damn near over for you.

    8. WRATH OF MARCIE - this is crazy..you're just having fun, now. don't be afraid, it's alright. Audrey and I had the pleasure of kicking off lollapalooza this year watching the go team. for a professional description of the event, please visit the nql blog for details. don't hurt yourself or break any furniture dancing around the room.

    9. THAT'S NOT MY NAME - if I had a nickel for every time I listened to the last 2 minutes of this song I'd easily have $12.75. add in all the times I danced like a fool and sang to this song and I could easily have 15 dollars. my favorite tune of last year.

nwa, korn, rage, go team, and the ting tings now have you flying high. in the words of mr. ricky bobby, 'that. just. happened!' you may use this run at your next party and I will allow you to take full credit when your guests start volunteering how awesome your music is.

now, I need to settle you down as all this positive energy starting to flow may make your head pop off, so we'll lay off the throttle.

    10. WHY DO YOU... keeping with the defiant/playful girl singers u can simply have fun with these next two. no hidden messages or agendas, just good sounds.

    11. TROUBLE.... you are now listening to pop music. hold on. u can do it. got..to...stay...strong. urge to smile, tap your feet, sing along is overwhelming. let it out, just make sure your car windows are up and you're alone so you don't have to say things like 'dude, I'm not gay, I just like the song!'

    12. GOODS - remember the movie 'good will hunting?' this is your "it's not your fault" moment. what MOS song to choose? I chose goods...it starts out at a good pace, keeping up with the prior songs, but just when you least expect it..boom. "it's all in your head" this may overwhelm you. keep it together. the weight is lifting...you are almost there. Godspeed, man.

    13. HALLELUJAH - this song took me a while to REALLY enjoy, but I realized that every time this song ended I wished it was still playing. the first 2 minutes are nothing special, but the end of this song is full of such positive energy that you should all try one thing. at the 2:10 mark of the song, blast the headphones, or fill your room as loudly as neighborly possible. make it dark, close your eyes, whatever....just find your center, if you will. let the music in and I gar-on-tee you will feel like you can accomplish anything when this song is over. legally, the makers of 'i just cured depression' are not liable for failures such as trying to fly, lifting cars, or joining mensa.

now, to lay more positive tracks on you may be too overwhelming, so we should ratchet back further. when you feel ready, you can follow song 13 with 'post-tenesmal bliss' in its entirety for further treatment of the blues.

but, the rules say 15, and I know how you all like to finish on the way down, so we'll take it down from here.

in honor of 'ptb,' one of the greatest mixes known to man, we will finish with the same 2 artists to take us home.

    14. SAY HELLO (to happiness) WAVE GOODBYE (to depression). congrats. you are ready for the final test.

    15. ONE GREAT CITY - a folksy song talking about hate. can you resist the urge to curl up with your sad thoughts and bonnie 'prince' billy? I know you can.

and in the words of the great alex supercilious, "you're welcome"

  2. Disqualified. See "Electric Fetus."

  3. 1. it took great restraint not to simply put 15 songs by Keane on my mix.
    2. alex and audrey had repeat groups on killer mix 1, so it is clearly OK, as they are the God and Godess of music. if you don't believe me, just ask them (just ask alex about himself though, as he will refuse to acknowledge the presence of anything resembling an equal).
    3. I like the de facto judge role you are playing, however.
    4. see 'your shit is..toast' for further details.

  4. Hey man, I'm just following the directive to "tear each other apart." I don't make the rules, etc.

  5. brother, your stuff is fine by me. you can be as acerbic as you like. I am equipped with a box of kleenex in case you are a blogging bully.

I would agree with your assessment that the same band need not appear in a mix. However, as you'll probably learn in an upcoming VH1 special 'Behind the mix tape,' my order was set with 'the marriage of figaro' by the berlin opera as my opener. as I was about to send my music, I thought 'plea from a cat..' was simply too fitting and my duettina would be unappreciated.
seriously, how can a beautiful aria get through to people who make choices like Buhloone Mindstate and don't even have the common courtesy to pick 'ego trippin'? I thought a song from the view of a cat seemed more appropriate for this crowd.

  6. "Ego Trippin'" is the joint a guy who listens to Korn would pick for his mixtape...

  7. i find it depressing when people put protected music on their mixes

    ReplyDelete
  8. sorry, I would agree that IS a real kick in the dick. which ones were protected? is there anyway around that or can 'protected' music only be purchased?

brian, thanks for the compliment, but I would posit that a guy that makes mix tapes at such high quality as myself wouldn't be picking from buhloone mindstate in the first place.

  9. if you burn your protected music to a CD in cdA format (the kind format that will play in the car, or your 1992 discman) and then import the songs from there... it'll lose the protection. Kinda the long way around, but it'll work.

  10. Your 5000 word essay about your mix reminds me of that person who loves to leave extremely long messages on your voicemail thinking that you actually want to listen to it. I responded basically the same way in that I didn't read it. I'll just listen to your David Gray, think about other crappy music I listened to when I was 12 years old, and judge your mix based on merit or lack there of....

  11. 1. Mark, I left the user manual for people like you to help you understand how to use it. musical mensa folk like alex and audrey will understand. you, sir, should print it out and highlight the important steps.

    2. so which tracks were protected?

    3. Audrey, if I follow damien's recs, can I still send to the drop box?

    4. how can one tell if music is protected before trying to send it?

    5. mark, when I was 12 I was listening to saga, toto, and loverboy, so just be glad I didn't put that on the mix!

    6. a day with no brian comments? I miss you already......

  12. i'm on a mac and when i look at the files, there is a little lock on the upper left corner of the file. also, if you "get info" on a track, it should say it's protected.

i believe Trouble is a Friend is protected, but from your description, i'm not so sure i want the beast unleashed.

  13. Kracker, this mix has serious problems. Where to begin...

    1. Korn!? This isn't 1997. Do you see any Spice Girls on my mix?

    2. The N.WA. pick...are you trying to be ironic?

    3. I hated your David Grey selection last year, I hated it this year, and I will probably hate it again next year.

    4. When I got to Track 13, all I could think was, "Hallelujah...it's almost over."

    5. I really like that Cure song.

    That's all for now.

  14. making a mental list for the love mix I will send you. keane, korn, david gray, and a lot more old rap tunes all to get heavy rotation. everything pre-95, nothing I read about on NQL.

Korn was for you to get back on track. you've lost your way from siamese dream to bonnie prince billy. we all miss you at face melter, smells like a turkey farm social club. and thank God there was no spice girls on your mix. are you saying you have the spice girls and chose not to share it?

and as an aside, try using this word in your next legal discussion....."maxification" - as in when a pt, telling me of his erectile dysfunction, said, "yo, I gets it up, let's just say things don't get to maxification, you know what I'm sayin'?"

    ReplyDelete
  15. What the hell. Your mix started out good. Actually I am going to look into downloading more of the Weakerthans, Good stuff. Then i was served up three shit songs in a row. You could have at least spaced out that garbage...

  16. I liked the Helio Sequence and Grand Archives songs..

  17. if there was one person on this list whom I didn't think could handle "in your face, f*** you" music it would be the guy with a penchant for excessive hugging and the nickname "touches"
